Billy Gilman Concert Review- Written July 7, 2001

I left home on July 6, 2001 around 7:15 to go to the Billy Gilman concert at Paramount's Carowinds in Charlotte, NC. When I finally got there, I went in the palladium and sat down in my 3rd row center seat. As I was sitting there, anxiously waiting for Billy to take over the stage, I met the people who were sitting next to me. They were very nice and reminded me of one of my friends. Then, at about 7:31 (right on time) the band started playing music. I almost instantly realized that it was the music to Billy's song "Little Bitty Pretty One". The crowd screamed as Billy took the stage. After the song was over he asked the audience if they were having fun and everyone screamed. Then he sang the song called "Elisabeth" from his new album "Dare to Dream". After that, he talked about the theme park we were at (Paramount's Carowinds). He asked, "Did anybody ride any rides here today?......I did. My favorite [ride] was Top Gun....." Then he said, "I want to ask the girls in here a question. How many of you have had your first kiss? [the crowd started screaming] Well, I know I have had mine!" Then he sang his song "Our First Kiss". Following that, he exclaimed, "This is a fun song, so have fun! Get those hands in the air!" as "You Don't, you Won't" begun. The audience did just what he said. They had fun! After that song was over, Billy said, "This is a song that means a lot to me because it's about a boy who lives with foster parents and is about to go meet his real mom and dad for the first time." The audience immediately knew that he was talking about the song "Oklahoma" and started roaring. "...It's called Oklahoma." After Oklahoma came to an end, he said "This next song I teamed up with St. Jude's to raise a lot of money to help sick kids. It's called 'There's a Hero.'" He sang the song and I noticed that a girl in a wheelchair 2 rows back was crying. Then, Billy said, "I want to thank ya'll for making this next song sell 2 million albums. [It's called] "One Voice". He sang that song and then said, "Thank you. Thank you," gave a bow, and then left the stage. After he left, Jessica Andrews took the stage and sang a few songs. After she was finished, they both came out together, talked for a while, posed for a picture, and then sang a duet. They once again said, "Thank you", took a bow together, and walked off the stage... I thought that this was an awesome performance by both Billy Gilman and Jessica Andrews.
