NAMES AND FACES: It's Jerry Lewis telethon time - the 39th, that is - Monday, August 30, 2004

Next Sunday, the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon will air for the 39th time starting at 10 p.m. on WDWB-TV (Channel 20).

The usual suspects? Lewis, the Muscular Dystrophy Association national chairman, Ed McMahon as telethon anchor, assisted by cohosts Jann Carl, Cynthia Garrett, Norm Crosby, Billy Gilman, Leyna Nguyen and Bob Zany. Also scheduled to appear: Celine Dion, Josh Groban, Elton John, Charo, the Platters, Beary Hobbs' Drifters, Kimberley Locke, Doris Roberts, Ray Romano, Jason Alexander, Ed Asner, Sean Hayes, Jeff Probst, Don Francisco, Alex Trebek, Billy Crystal, Tony Orlando, Kenny Rogers, Dr. Phil, Leeza Gibbons and the Rock.

The unusual: Special segments on the late poet Mattie Stepanek, MDA National Goodwill ambassador to whom the telethon is dedicated. The goal is to exceed the 2003 total of more than $60.5 million.

Billy Performs at National Night Out Against Crime - Thursday, August 5, 2004

CHARLESTOWN - Local residents gathered in Ninigret Park for the town's first celebration of "National Night Out Against Crime" on Tuesday night.

The event, sponsored by the Charlestown Police Department and the town's recreation department, allowed residents to learn about the many public safety agencies that serve the area.

Young and old were able to mull around the park and check out the various emergency apparatus.

Kids jumped aboard and checked out the inside of the fire trucks.
