WSOC Racing Reunion - Charlotte, NC (10/07/00)
by Kenneth P.
"Well How'ya guys doin'?"
I've heard BG say it a few times on TV and radio interviews, but when you
hear it in person, it was just... AMAZNG! He bounded out onto the stage
with those words, and started right into "Little Bitty Pretty One." AMAZING
is all that can be said. The ampitheater-style concert was packed, and I
know everyone up on the hill just had to watch the video screens, but even
sitting 19 rows back from the stage, he was hard to see!! Like he's said,
"I'm small... but I learn fast." He had the crowd wrapped around his little
finger. In between songs, he bantered, made some witty comments, and
cleverly plugged his CD. He told the crowd some background behind "One
Voice" and "Oklahoma" and everyone clapped wildly after the songs! (Oh yeah,
he blundered a little when he was talking about Oklahoma, because after he
announced the title, everyone cheered (of course), and he said "What? You
already know this one? The single hasn't even come out yet... oh wait,
that's right, it's on my ONE VOICE album too... DAH! Anyway...here it is!")
Naturally, he got a long standing ovation at the end of his performance,
even from up on the hill where it takes a lot more effort to get up! He
didn't get a live band, and he only sang for about 30 minutes, which meant
he didn't get to sing all of the songs from his album (I don't remember
hearing "Spend Another Night", "There's a Hero", or "'Til I can Make It On
My Own")... he did sing "Roly Poly" about halfway through, though,
pretending that there WAS a band with him ... "PLAY IT PIANO!... (piano solo
played) PLAY IT SAX! (sax solo) etc... great improv on the "air guitar" too!
The only disappointing part of the experience was that I couldn't get an
autograph! He went right backstage and never appeared again. I guess I
will just have to go to a smaller concert next time!
