My radio station had Billy Gilman featured on a weekly show this past Sunday, August 13, 2000, taped maybe at least a month before airing. Any other stations have him on out there? anyone type it up? The cool part was- radio usually plays only singles, not the other album cuts from the CD. Our host loves it so much he played lotsa cuts. Cool. Here's their visit.
[Ichabod played Little Things.]
ICHABOD CAINE, KMPS:- Billy Gilman's Little Things, on Honky Tonk Sundays. Hi, this is Ichabod Caine- twelve year old Billy Gilman is my guest- on the satellite from Nashville- Billy?
BILLY:- Yeah-
ICHABOD:- Hey- how are you, dude?
B:- Good- 'n you?
I:- Excellent.
B:- That's good.
I:- I uh, I figured out the word that you probably use the most in the last few months- you ready?
B:- Ready.
I:- Thank you.
B:- Ah ha ha ha ha. (Then in a comical voice like in a horror movie) Say.. please.. and.. thank.. you....
I:- That's all you need to be successful in life- please and thank you. Hey dude- let me tell you- I LOVE your new CD.
B:- Well thank you.
I:- See, there you go- there's the thank you. Now, let me tell you something else. I gotta tell you my favorite song.
B:- What?
I:- The Snake song.
B:- Ha ha ha ha.... That's mostly every kid's favorite.
I:- That is so cool- I've never heard it before.
B:- Yeah, oh, it was originally sung... I mean it wasn't sung- it was written by Bobby Braddock.
I:- Oh is that- so it's an old tune, it's been around for a while?
B:- Yeah.
I:- It's incredible dude- I love it!
B:- Thank you.
I:- And you just nail it!
B:- Thank you.
I:- And by the way- BILLY:- Thank you- ICHABOD:- I'm going to keep track of how many thank you's I hear out of you during our visit too, dude.
B:- Okay... only three.
I:- You are the most appreciative- and I love it!
B:- Well thank you.
I:- There he goes again. Here is Billy Gilman to sing The Snake Song. And then more with Billy here on Honky Tonk Sundays.
[Ichabod played The Snake song.]
ICHABOD:- The Snake song- Billy Gilman- from his new CD here on Honky Tonk Sundays. What a funny song- Billy? I gotta ask you this- are you sure- you probably been asked this before- There's a rumor going around, that you're actually a full grown adult in a kid's body.
B:- Well, all my relatives and parents say that, but I think, I'm just a regular eleven year old, doing what I want to do since I was three. (he really said eleven.)
I:- Billy Gilman is here, and talks about his big hit, One Voice- comin up next on Honky Tonk Sundays.
[Then an adv, then Ichabod played It's Your Love.]
ICHABOD:- Tim and Faith on Honky Tonk Sundays- Billy Gilman's favorite two stars. He loves em all, he just told me, but those are his favorites- so we dedicate that to you, Billy. All right, on the satellite from Nashville, is Billy Gilman. Billy, ah, I want you to go back for me, you don't have to go as far back as some of us- I want your very first childhood memory- the first thing you can remember about being on the planet.
BILLY:- Probably... when I was... four. I got my first karaoke machine, and all I did was sing and sing and sing and sing and sing and sing and sing and sing- and I never stopped. It was- I'll never forget- that Christmas morning, waking up and getting that karaoke machine.
I:- Isn't that funny. Do you remember one of the first songs- can you sing a little piece- just a wee bit- of your first karaoke tune you ever sang.
B:- I sang this one by Pam Tillis- (sings with a drawl) Cleopatra... everybody calls, I'm the king a denial.
I:- (laughs long and clear) Oh Billy- you're too hot! Hey, let me tell you something too.
B:- Yeah?
I:- Not only are you fun, and an entertainer, but- let me tell you something, dude- you have really touched some hearts... with One Voice.
B:- Yes.
I:- I mean- BILLY:- Thank you. ICHABOD:- Doesn't it show you, does it show you Billy, cause it does all of us, the impact that-
B:- That the song has on everybody?
I:- Well not only that, but the impact that one person's prayer, and their heart, can have?
B:- Yeah. It's incredible. When my, when the two of my producers handed it to me, um, I just loved it. It was such a great message. And the minute... I listened to that song, I instantly... um, washed my head, washed that song out of my mind... and came into the Columbine incident.
I:- Ohhh... well because, yeah, that's what it brings to mind, doesn't it? but it also-
B:- yeah-
I:- But it also shows you the power that one person can have-
B:- Can have in their mind to say to God.
I:- Yes. Here's the tune- Billy Gilman's One Voice, on Honky Tonk Sundays.
[Ichabod played One Voice.]
I:- Billy Gilman's One Voice. Beautiful song- beautiful video as well- on Honky Tonk Sundays. Billy- I want you to know- and I'm sure you do know this- that song shows the impact that one prayer, one single voice can have.
B:- Yeah. I mean, um, I kinda go to church- and I, um, I go to Sunday school and stuff... but... yeah.
I:- So what I'm saying is- you believe what you're singing there- you believe in the power of prayer and the fact that one person can change things.
B:- I guess so, yeah. Ichabod:- Yeah. (both laugh from hearing no further insights from each other.)
[Ichabod played There's A Hero.]
I:- Billy Gilman- and There's A Hero on Honky Tonk Sundays. We're getting to know the life and faith of Billy Gilman. Hang on, more with him here.
[Ichabod announced country star Jo Dee Messina next week on the show, then played That's The Way It Is.]
ICHABOD:- Billy Gilman is my special guest- and here he is to sing- you remember this classic- the Michael Martin Murphy song- What's Forever For. Billy Gilman sings it on Honky Tonk Sundays.
[played What's Forever For.]
I:- Billy Gilman and What's Forever For. You nail it! my man. My special guest on the satellite from Nashville is Mr Billy Gilman. Billy- what do you tell kids that want to get into the music biz?
B:- Well- no dream is too extreme. And you will always follow your dreams and go far.
I:- No dream... is too extreme- isn't that- So you don't put a lid or a ceiling on anybody- you just say go for whatever you think is on your heart.
B:- (a grin in the voice) Only if your parents say so.
I:- (laughs hard, and Billy joins in laughing.) Hey, what are your mom and dad like? because, I mean- while we are so impressed with you, and your talent, and your heart- you must got... a... good mom and dad behind you, huh?
B:- Yeah- I love my mom and dad- they're a hundred percent behind me.
I:- Isn't that the coolest?
B:- Yes.
I:- How are they handling all this? So what do you get? you get an allowance? or is that still- or what?
B:- Well, I do do chores- I lawn the mower-
I:- lawn the mower- (laughs)
B:- I mow the lawn- (laughs)- I feed the cat- I feed the hampsters- So I do do chores and stuff. So I do get an allowance, kind of.
I:- Kind of an allowance.
B:- I don't want a lot, so I'll get a dollar a day.
I:- You get a buck a day- that's good.
B:- Only if I do the chores though.
I:- Oh I see. So there's some work involved here.
B:- Yeah. So in my piggy bank right now there's only a penny.
I:- So you been spending some of your money?
B:- (laughs) No, I haven't been doing the chores lately.
I:- Oh I see your point- (both laugh together). Very good. More with Billy Gilman and his music off his brand new CD comin up here.
[Ichabod then played Keith Urban's Your Everything.]
I:- Ichabod Caine here, thank you for listening- we're getting into the life and faith of twelve year old Billy Gilman. What a sweet pea he is. I want to play another song by him, then we'll get into more- listen to Billy sing- ha ha ha- I love this- he's got some romance going on here- I Think She Likes Me. Billy Gilman.
[played I Think She Likes Me.]
I:- Billy Gilman- I Think She Likes Me- although I just asked Billy and he said he did have a girlfriend, but right now he's pretty much a solo- because his passion is mainly for the road and what he's loving doing.
Talking with twelve year old Billy Gilman- Billy- do you feel what you do requires work? certainly work- but it's something you love?
B:- Yeah. We worked hard on the album, really really hard for a couple of months. Actually one month, I did fourteen songs in one week. ICHABOD:- Wow! BILLY:- ...in Nashville- and it was done the third- the album was done the third week, and then we had to figure out- which picture would go on the cover- and what would the cover look like? and how would it appear? do we want it to be black and white? or color? and there's many many many details in making an album- and it was hard- But when it came out- it all payed back.
I:- Boy, I'll bet- boy, it is- it is incredible my man. And may I say- your stage presence, in addition to being a great singer-
B:- Thank you-
I:- You gotta groove going on on stage- were you taught how to do- you got like, teachers on how to dance and how to groove and stuff?
B:- I did, uh, Angela Bacari, who is one of my managers, and Scott Siman from RPM management- she worked with me for a couple years. She worked with me on my voice and stuff, and then like the first concert she'd ever went to I was like stick boy. I was, stayed still- I didn't know what to do.
I:- (laughs with him)
B:- And so, she helped me conquer that obstacle- and just let me move around. She said- the stage is just like your home- pretend it's your grandmother's- cause this is where I sing all the time- my grandmother's living room, my stereo's in there and stuff- And so she goes, pretend it's your grandmother's living room and it'll all come easy to you. And so I did.
I:- That is very cool- what great advice. And plus, be yourself, I would think would be a key.
B:- Exactly (said slowly as EGAZAKLY)
I:- Right- more with Billy Gilman coming up here on Honky Tonk Sundays.
[played Stuff by Diamond Rio.]
I:- Rio, Stuff, on Honky Tonk Sundays. Hello, I'm Ichabod Caine. We're getting into the life and faith of Billy Gilman. Billy- here' something we haven't asked you yet- what are your future plans? you're twelve years old now, your rockin, you're lovin what your doing, but what's the future hold?
B:- Well, I'm making a... excuse me, I'm getting over a cold- making my Christmas album. Next month. It's really cool. I got some really cool songs on it, and um- We're just gonna make some more albums, and do dates, and hopefully meet you.
I:- Ha ha ha ho- you are too sweet. Hey, who's the- your favorite person that you've met so far? Last question- somebody that you've met that- oh my gosh- this has been my dream.
B:- Oh, there's so many. Probably, all of them- but if I had to choose a favorite- favorites, it'd be Tim and Faith Hill.
I:- Oh very cool- Billy... you are an inspiration, and a sweetheart. Keep being yourself and treat it like grandma's living room.
B:- I will.
I:- Hey, thank you for taking time with us.
B:- Thank you for having me.
I:- What was that- six thank you's? or?
B:- It was, four.
I:- Okay- see ya buddy!
B:- Bye!
Ichabod:- What an absolute sweetheart. Billy Gilman. Hey, next week, Cat Sanquist has booked Jo Dee Messina- join me back here- thank you Chris Carson for putting together a wonderful show, at Huntsman Entertainment, Nashville. That's where our show is produced. See ya next week. I gotta leave you with another Billy Gilman song- I love his album- here's Little Bitty Pretty One- you remember this tune? It's Billy's rendition.
[played Little Bitty Pretty One.]
