Date: Monday, July 10, 2000, 6:30 AM PDT Interviewers: Pat Still and Tom Mailey Radio Station: New Country 105.1 FM Location: Sacramento, California (Billy was on phone from unknown location) PAT: Hey Billy? BILLY: (energetically) Hey guys. PAT: How are ya? BILLY: Good and you? PAT: Um ... we're doing uh ... (Pat and Tom both start laughing at the enthusiasm in Billy's voice) PAT: I love your energy. TOM: How ya feeling, Billy? BILLY: I'm feelin' a lot better. It was a real shock. PAT: Let's uh ... let's get down to business here, Billy. What in the world happened? TOM: Yeah, could you give us the details? BILLY: Well, I went to this golfing clinic that is like a golf ... lesson that teaches you golf and stuff. And so we had time left before we had to go in for lunch. And so we decided to hit some balls and whoever hit it closest to the hole wins. PAT: Uh-huh. BILLY: But nobody hit it closest to the hole. I hit it toward the creek. Yeah ... (laughs) ... Then he said, "When everybody's done, go stand next to your ball." And so everybody went to stand next to their ball. The kid across the creek, was hittin' first. And so I was lookin' down at my ball, minding my own business, not knowing that the ball that the other kid was hittin' is going to hit me. TOM: And he ... BILLY: And then it happened. TOM: Oh. BILLY: Bam! TOM: And like, what did you do at that point? Did you ... uh ... BILLY: I just held my mouth and closed my eyes. (All laugh) TOM: Did the kid ... PAT: That's how I golf most of the time. But everything's okay now? BILLY: Oh yeah, everything is fine. It's just going to take another six to eight weeks to see if it'll hold. And ... but ... it ... everything is going fine ... uh ... all ... it's all coming up roses so far. (Pat and Tom laugh) PAT: Oh, well there you go. Have you tried singing since then? I mean do you ... BILLY: Oh yeah. I'm going to be on the Jay ... Jay Leno show Tuesday night. PAT: Tomorrow night? BILLY: Tomorrow night. PAT: Uh-huh. TOM: Right. BILLY: And ... um ... I'm doin' ... I'm rescheduling for the Today show ... uh ... July twenty-sixth. PAT: Now you missed some other ... uh ... gigs. Are you gonna reschedule those? BILLY: Uh-huh. PAT: Really? BILLY: Yeah ... yep. (a second of silence) TOM: ... Like a show in Sacramento perhaps? BILLY: Yeah. (Billy suddenly realizes that they are referring to a July 2 show in Sacramento that he had had to cancel.) BILLY: Oh yes! Yes. (Pat and Tom laugh) TOM: Yeah, we had our barbecue, uh ... our big barbecue festival ... PAT: We missed you. It was very successful but it would have been an even more so had you been able to make it. We did miss you and we got a card signed by a whole bunch of people. So if you don't mind, before we let you go, we want to get an address to where to send this card 'cause it's a big card and all these people are wishing you, "Get well". And ... BILLY: Okay, yeah. PAT: Okay? BILLY: Okay! PAT: Now Billy ... or is it "Bill" now? When will you become Bill? BILLY: (slowly) I'll become Bill when I be like thirty-six ... PAT: Thirty-six? BILLY: ... or forty. PAT: Okay, what's old to you? BILLY: (takes a deep breath) Old. Humm ... (Thinks about it.) BILLY: That's a good question. (Another pause) BILLY: Thirteen. TOM: Thirteen is old to you. (Billy laughs then DJs laugh.) PAT: Are you still drinkin' stuff ... is that the way you're eating? I can't imagine you're really taking a big hunk out of anything? Probably most everything through a straw? BILLY: Right. Uh ... I can't eat a ... I can't have a straw. And ... um ... I'm beginning to eat like ... um ... popcorn, and ... um ... like all I ... I can eat steak and all that stuff so it's gettin' ... it's ... it's real better. But like the first two or three days ... um ... I ate like nothin' but ice cream and soup. PAT: (sarcastically) Oh, that had to be tough. BILLY: (laughs) Yeah. Popsicle therapy, you know? PAT: Right. Popsicle therapy. We love that. BILLY: (laughs) Yeah. PAT: We're glad you're doing well and we'll look for you tomorrow night on the ... uh ... Tonight Show. And I know that somebody else is handling your schedule so we can't really nail it down but we are trying to reschedule you out here on September the tenth to possibly open for Randy Travis. We think that would be great. BILLY: (enthusiastically) Yes. PAT: You'd be open to that then? That would be a good idea? BILLY: Yeah. TOM: Wanna go golfing with us beforehand? BILLY: (without missing a beat) Why not?! (Pat and Tom laugh) BILLY: (hopefully) Maybe I'll loose TWO teeth! (Pat and Tom laugh even harder) TOM: Rip it up tomorrow night on the Tonight Show. (Billy's single "One Voice" starts playing) PAT: Thanks Billy. BILLY: I will. Thanks, you guys. PAT: Uh-huh. Hold right on. BILLY: (enthusiastically to the listeners) Bye! (Pat and Tom laugh) PAT: Ain't he the best?! (Introducing the song.) PAT: Here is Billy Gilman. All twelve years old of him. |
